Kiwi Snow Reports, New Zealand

June 2, 2000 - Free and Independent

Kia Ora

No doubt it happened and the flurry of emails confirmed it was a bIg one. OZ got dumped on. No other words for it really. In fact I got so many emails I thought I should share a few, along with my replies.

We've all seen the TV pics and I am sure a few of you have checked out the OZ snow cams. Without doubt there is nothing quite like a big dump of fluffy white to get the heart racing and the pulse pumping.

So this issue is to rejoice in the big dump across the Tasman. Hallelujah.

>== Snow Reports

Here's an update after our recent flurry of wild weather over the last 24 hours. Several fronts dumping heaps of rain in the valley and some nice snow falls on the hills. Even better news is snow forecast down to 300m with some heavy falls above 600m for Friday and Saturday.

Treble Cone
55cm at base in the last 24 hours and over a metre in the Saddle Basin. Yippee. Treble Cone Cam going live some time around 5 June and Treble Cone snow area looking like opening 22 June. But that's under review :-)

Coronet Peak
5 cm around the base buildings with 20 - 30 cm at the top. Looking like an opening this weekend sometime, possibly 5 June.

Cardrona
Current snow situation as of 8am Thursday 1st June 2000. Top of main basin 80cm. Carpark 35cm. Bottom of double chair 15cm.
They were expecting to open 24 June although that is under review. At soonest another 10 days.

Remarkables
Hmm didn't get a report although a quick glance at Remarkable Cam shows a snow line a 100 metres or so below the base buildings. Toilet bowl standing out very white.

Waiorau Snow Farm
20 - 30 cm of snow on the trails.

Isn't it just brilliant. Nothing better to get the blood stirring than a good solid dump! Yeeha.

Gavin
> take a look at ski.com.au and view all web cams.

Evan
No I couldn't. It would hurt too much. It's still raining here.

Gavin
> It is bizarre as there was snow on the hills 35 minutes from Sydney.
> It is the best dump we have ever had in the month of May.

Evan
Come on 2000!

OK so you get the picture. Here is an email from Clare in Noosa. Her comments are preceded with an " > " and mine follow.

> AHHHH, my friend and I are jumping up and down with uncontrollable excitement - we
> will be flying to the NZ snow-fields in 40 days!!

Tooooo muuuuuuuuuuucccccccccchhhhhhhhhhh.

> I've heard New Zealand snow is better, deeper, higher and seasons are longer.

It's all true. Maybe not right now, but its all true. Heli skiing or boarding or even just wondering around on a pair of tourers in the Mt Cook region would have to be some of the worlds most stunning.

> So, what advice can you lend us Aussies with regard to our week in Queenstown?

OK here's the three point plan.
1. Pace yourself :-)
Especially on the snow. Ease those muscles in to the hill and enjoy the chairlift rides.

2. Go up the mountain.
If you plan to, do it. And do it early.

I have had some of my best days skiing in the rain. It's true. Mt Ruapehu. I have some of my best memories sitting in the car park being rocked by gale force winds. It's true. Mt Hutt.

Then again, I've had some of my best days with brilliant sunshine and fresh powder. All over.

3. Explore
Plan a day off and a drive around the basin. Go check out the bungy or have a spin in a jet boat. It's one of the things we are good at.

> Just how cold is it over there?

It can get pretty cold especially on a bit of a windy overcast day up on the hill. Get in to the layer technique. Wool next to the skin and everything needs a good overlap :-)

> And which mountain should we first target??

Well if you are flying in to Queenstown then I would definitely check out Coronet Peak on your first day. Even an afternoon or night session if you arrive middayish.

Coronet is real close to town so its quick and easy to get up there. Heck might as well go straight from the airport. Have a few runs, settle in to the Wakatipu basin, have a look around and plan the next few days.

The 5 snow areas all offer a slightly different experience, and they all have their day. Picking it is something even locals get wrong ...... often. If I had a dollar for every one of those legendary big falls at Treble Cone or the Remarkables that I missed ......

Check out the following page which has a table comparing the vital statistics of the five local snow areas;
http://www.KiwiNewZ.com/html/snowareas.htm

> Well, best wishes for a big dump soon, I'll eagerly keep up with all snow reports.
> Regards, one VERY excited Aussie,

Thanks for the feedback and I hope you have a great holiday!

Ferny here.

Im 24 live in sydney and saw snow for the first time last year in NZ, bit of a sheltered life huh.

Anyway I was in queenstown last year boarding and i got full-on hooked. Ive been chasing last years rip curl heli challenge as ive been watching the 98 one all year.

By the way that little restaurant "chico's", in queenstown went off for ribs and fish. Wish I could be back this year but IM doin a big euro tour with a mate so the finances will be limited.

To cut a long story short the e-mail updates are cool, love to read up on how its all doin, and also the snow reports on snow.co.nz go off.

Congrats again on a cool service and bump you all later.
