Kiwi Snow Reports, New Zealand

October 3, 2000 - Free and Independent

Kia Ora

Just as we thought the end of the snow season was upon us in the deep south a new round of wild weather whitens the landscape. Here is a pearler from Jim .....

" .... a river of spring cyclonic isobars with a couple of snow flicks ......"

But without a doubt the season is nearing an end. Chances are come Monday the Remarkables will be the only field open around these parts. Mt Hutt they say is still looking real sweet and has a few weeks of running yet and Mt Ruapehu fields will be targeting late October.

I will send out the odd snow report thru summer to keep you all in touch with all things white. If you want to read more of my raving you might like to sign up for our New Zealand News Zine.

>== Short Takes

Did you hear they want to spend NZ$80 million building 12 kilometres of gondola from Queenstown to Milford Sound! Mis guided or what? Imagine 80 million $'s to build a big bang snow resort in the Ben Ohau's. Get rid of those slow useless gondola's. Just imagine 12 km of 100 people cable cars careering around the Southern Alps for some serious altitude.

Nobody bothered to even try to guess what an acid drop was. One went down during the recent Snowboard Nationals on Coronet and a cute little Kiwi Key ring was up for grabs for the first person to tell me what it is. Or was. Come on you spineless lot of couch potatoes. Some of you must know a grom that could have told you! What about a search engine search? Yahoo? Google? What about a dumb guess! What about if the prize was a pearl necklace? OK. OK. For all you passive key board shy non responsive lot an acid drop is when a boarder jumps out of a chairlift passing over a half pipe straight in to the half pipe. Suck on that.

The slip at the Nevis bluff has kept the main highway into Queenstown closed for close on two weeks and is only now being open for a limited time in the morning and afternoon. Forced to take the "high road" over the Crown Range some unsuspecting drivers have been caught out by the snow. Heck. There was 12 cm up there this morning!

>== Fresh Snow Falls

Just as we thought it was time to hang up the season pass and slip on the shorts for good along comes a nother little beauty from the south with a few fresh deposits of snow on the ranges and a nice cool breeze to boot. The firewood stack is looking pretty scary

The two columns represent, roughly, top and bottom measurements reported at about 6am for the previous 24 hours. If it is blank it is because they didn't get any snow or I never did find out how much. These figures are a combination of the early bird radio report ( sometimes ), faxed snow reports and extensive personal research :-)

>== Snow Area Report as of 3 October

Treble Cone

Closing on Sunday 8th October. Tuesday was free for women, Wednesday is free for men and on Thursday if you rent skis or a snowboard you get a free lift pass. Too much.

Coronet Peak

Well rumour has it that the Peak is looking so nice with new snow and fab riding that they are seriously reviewing what was a pretty firm closing date of 8 October, Sunday.

Bet these Patrollers who just got first tracks in the Back Bowls this morning are pumping for a few days grace.

>== Ozoneless

Three times the land mass of the United States or more than 27 million kilometres. The ozone hole over the Antarctica is the biggest ever, 5 percent larger than the previous record set in 1996 and New Zealand is lining up to cop a fare wack.

They say the UV in New Zealand is fifty percent stronger than in the Northern hemisphere for three main reasons. We are closer to the sun, we are closer to the hole and we have a cleaner atmosphere. Seems the pollution trapped in the lower atmosphere in the Northern hemisphere screens UV as well!

Certain chemicals believed to damage the ozone have been banned, including chlorofluorocarbons that are widely used in aerosol propellants, refrigerators and air conditioners.

I wonder wot all that UV does to snow? Melts it probably.

Be Ozone aware. Keep your hat on and go for the 30+.

>== Primo Peak to Porridge Goes Off

A record of thirty two competitors, eleven women and twenty one men, lined up for the Primo Peak to Porridge, a combined snow and surf event.

The sun was out, the snow was good and the porridge pit was brimming at Coronet Peak. Mid afternoon saw the boardercross all done and the team heading off to Riverton to sneak in an evening surf. Always nice to do the double in a day!

Porrige Pit and it's local snow making guru Sides in full flight.
Sides hoofing it over the Porridge Pit.

A stiff Southland southerly forced a change of surf venue. Porridge was onshore and living up to its name. Trees was the call.

The men's final of the surfing was held in heavy persistent hail and as if to compensate the swell cleaned up and the finalists responded with some stunning surfing.

For full report and pics of the event check out the website.

Chris Vile of Boarderzone.com has produced another piece of brilliance with his coverage of the event. Stills, news and a video clip with some classic southern scenes and a cameo appearance from my daughter Lily.

Thanks Chris.

You will need Real Player 8 so if you haven't got it take time to get it because it is worth it. Instructions at Boarderzone.com

> == All You Need To Know About Snow

National Snow and Ice Data Center. With a name like that you would have to think these guys know what they are talking about. And they do seem to have it sussed.

"Snow forecasts are better than they used to be and they continue to improve, but snow forecasting remains one of the more difficult challenges for meteorologists. One reason is that for many of the more intense snows, the heaviest snow amounts fall in surprisingly narrow bands that are on a smaller scale than observing networks and forecast zones.

"Also, extremely small temperature differences that define the boundary line between rain and snow make night-and-day differences in snow forecasts. This is part of the fun and frustration that makes snow forecasting so interesting

>== Whakapapa Fuming over Turoa

Whakapapa ( Ruapehu Alpine Lifts or RAL for short ) is still having trouble getting permission to buy a snow field no one else wants! Now that's bizarre. Here is their media release on the finding of the Commerce Commission..

"The preliminary decision rejects the merger of the Whakapapa and Turoa ski resorts because of potential weakening of competition in the North Island ski market. RAL chairman Tomas Huppert and the receiver for the financially crippled Turoa Ski Resort, Gary Traveller, were not surprised at the commission's interim decision.

"However, Mr Huppert says RAL has received a very positive and supportive reaction from North Island skiers and snowboarders, and is still confident of a successful outcome.

So Whakapapa has set up a petition to convince The Commerce Commission otherwise.
http://www.whakapapa.co.nz/petition.html

And here is what they would like you to sign;

TO THE COMMERCE COMMISSION: The Draft Determination pursuant to the Commerce Act 1986 ("the Act") in the matter of an application of a business acquisition involving: Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Ltd And Turoa Ski Resort Ltd (in receivership) The Commission has asked for comment on the attraction to day and season pass skiers and snowboarders of a seamless lift pass and a guided traverse between Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields. We the undersigned believe that these would be significant attractions and they would increase the number of days each of us would be likely to ski or board at Ruapehu each year.

All very interesting and one would have to say it is hard to imagine Turoa being dismantled. My 10 cents worth. What about a "guided traverse" that includes Tukino .... the other Mt Ruapehu snow field?

>== More Bragging about ThaT snowfall.

Well here is a bit of a brag from Sue Kerry. She couldn't resist :-)

Hey dude,

Well, I decided after reading all the bragging that I should add to it. We flew into Christchurch on that Sunday after that 1.8m dump, and while we couldn't leave Canterbury, we did make it out to Mt Cheeseman, (Mt Hutt opened too late for us unfortunately) and 1.8m on Mt Hutt equated to VERY DEEP POWDER on Cheeseman.

Stuff like I have never seen before (being a Whakapapa skier up until now). And I am now in love with the South Island Ski Fields especially TC, Coronet Peak & Cardrona. We had a perfect holiday week of Sunshine, sunburn (the 15+ type), Speights, and of course SNOW!!! while all the other suckers put in their dutiful 40 hours. And it only snowed on our way in and out of Wanaka!!!

Timing is everything. Cheers Sue
