>================ North Island Snow NewZ from Ben Sintes

"Just got back from 3 days of the white stuff at Turoa & Whakapapa. Had an absolute ball on Saturday night ( 20 September ) at the fireworks extravaganza at Whakapapa. $10,000 worth in 20 minutes. The ground shook with some of the colourful explosions. It's an annual event that I can recommend to anybody.

"Both Turoa and Whakapapa are looking rather bare at the carpark level but there is some awesome skiing to be had on the upper parts of both fields with both having at least 400 vertical metres to ski. At Turoa you can still ski to the carpark although its a bit like skiing on a slushie drink. Best skiing has to be, on Turoa - the Jumbo, & Moro race t-bar and on Whakapapa the West Ridge Quad & the Far West T-bar. For some reason these lifts never seem to be heavily populated.

"Snow conditions at both these fields should improve this week with snow forecast over the next couple of days. When the weather clears and with those long fine spring days anybody not heading up is gonna be missing out!

And so I asked Ben what the low-down on the Northern fields closing was ...

"Both fields are hoping to stay open until the end of October, this is shorter than their normal closing of around the second week in November. If they receive more snow then they will stay open as long as possible.

" If weather patterns in the Antarctic Oceans below the Tasman Sea prevail there is still a good chance of a last cold blast from the south. Here's hoping!!

>================ Check this our for some ReaL SnoW

The Mt Baker snow area in Washington State received a world record snowfall of 1140 inches ( approx. 29 metres ) during the past season. The previous record was 1122 inches, set at Mt Ranier ( also in Washington ) in the winter of 1971 - 1972.

US officials said snowfall can be difficult to measure accurately because it settles, melts and drifts from place to place but they added that the Mt Baker measurement met snowfall observation standards and practices prescribed by the US National Weather Service.

Thanks to Alan Graham and the Ruapehu Ski Club bulletin for this little titbit. Any snow areas in New Zealand or Australia like to try and match it?
