Southern Lakes including Queenstown and Wanaka

Free and Independent

Well Mt Hutt beat everyone else in the Southern Hemisphere and opened yesterday Monday 7 June with the 20cm they got on June 4 topped up by those big snow guns.. That's 7 days later than last year. By all accounts the snow was pretty good, the mountain was pretty white and everyone was stoked to be sliding around in the hills.

The weather forecast for today is reasonably promising with snow forecast to below 1 000m and its raining hard outside right now. Come on everyone think cold!

>================ Cardrona

Recent Snow falls at the base
4 June - 10cm

A short, sharp Southerly blast has heralded the onset of winter. The snow was packed by groomers so it will stick around and makes a good base. Proposed opening date is Thursday June 24th. For a fabulous photo of this snowy scene for all you desk jockeys check out the Cardrona page. Thanks Nigel.

>================ Treble Cone

Recent Snow falls at the base
4 June - 5cm

Planned opening for June 19. And yes the Austrians are coming ... again. They re wrote the Alpine World Cup history book taking the first nine places in a World Cup Super-G at Innsbruck in December. They obviously feel the need for speed.

>================ Waiorau Snow Farm

They are full! Some of you may know that apart from the X Country Skiing the Waiorau Snow Farm is Legendary around the world for its winter tyre testing facilities. The testing grounds are fully booked from 1 July to end of August with twelve buildings to house the testing teams, tyres and masses of computer equipment. Last year there was so much data flowing to and from tyre headquarters around the world that telecom has installed a state of the art transmission pole for 90 lines. Now this ain't no ordinary pole. It is designed to handle winds up to 300km/h and one metre of ice!

Oh and don't forget the skinny skiing!

>================ Check this snow report .... from Mammoth Mountain

Thursday, June 03, 1999

"JUNE FRESHIES! Mammoth Rocks! 6 to 8 inches of fresh powder! Cool temperatures keeping the snow fresh for the weekend! Mammoth is now the only ski/board resort open in California! So get up here and make some fresh tracks!"

Now why can't we get snow falls like that?

>================ Want to run a snow field?

So you think you have got it rough? Check out this list of "challenges" that Ruapehu Alpine Lifts has had to face at Whakapapa .... lifts breaking due to heavy ice ( 1956, 1958 ), burial of lifts in deep snow drifts ( 1956, 1961, 1964, 1991 ), lahar damage ( 1969, 1975 ) and ashfall on snow ( 1954, 1996 ). And the good news? Ruapehu the volcanoe was quiet in 1998 with only two small "bursts" on January 1 and 2. A series of seismic shakes were recorded in May but these did not lead to any eruptions. Thanks to the Ruapehu Ski Club Bulletin for these little titbits.
