Just as we all start to get despondent and the snow conditions get a bit schmoee along comes a little storm, deposits a few more of the whites and tickles all the snow fields in to shape again. Over night we are happiness filled and our snow exploits increase with new vim and vigour.
That, says Peter, the resident ski instructor at Otago Ski Club and minder of Remarkable Cam, is what September is all about.
An wow there is a good base up at Coronet. Warm weather has worn of some of the ridges but the valleys and gullies have a great depth. Spring conditions often offer a 3 - 4 hour window of superb conditions and a chance to enjoy the sun. There is plenty of season left yet!

>================ They send mail
After a glorious 6 days skiing in Queenstown, our group of 5 have now returned home to dreary, overcast Brisbane. Having skied at Cardrona, The Remarks and Coronet last year during one of the worst seasons on record, it was a nice change to be able to ski on fresh powder this year (and falling over didn't hurt as much either!)
But alas! It's time to return to work and life as usual, until, maybe, next year. Unfortunately we had a failed attempt at getting through the Crown Range to Cardrona on Saturday 21/8 due to bad weather and weren't able to get back there before having to head back home to Oz. Maybe we'll have better luck next year?!
But if anyone is looking for some great accommodation, you can't go past St James Apartments in the heart of Queenstown. Say hi to Dean when you get there! Thank you for your emails in the past few months!

>================ BoarderZone Go Ballistic
You gotta know this guy but the tricks he does with his Sony DigiVid and the on the spot straight to the web format always blow me away.
Who are BoarderZone? One guy, Chris Vile. Chris has a passion for the mountains and crusades around the countryside covering competitions and cool events. Now that's a cool job. I wonder if WINZ have anything like that listed at the moment?
What does he do in Summer? Why fly to Morocco, have an evening in Marrakech as a guest of the King then do the webby thing for the Eco Challenge. Then Chris has to fly over to Fernie in Canada, change in to the winter mode and do some more of those boardy things. Oh no. It gets worse.
This time it's the latest Half Pipe competition at Coronet Peak. Chris reports some of the most rad Half Pipe action he has ever seen with the Kiwi's right up there. Cruise on over to the BoarderZone report for some live action.

New Zealand National Snowboard's on at the moment. Masters went off with the Cardrona Hotel rocking with old rockers.
Here's an update from Nigel Kerr.
"Thought this one should be added in as conditions have changed so much in the last few days - for the better. A long period of warmer temperatures meant spring snow which was followed by some rain. Yuck. However, before it could do much more than make things wet - it snowed. 18cm at the top of the mountain and 8cm at the bottom. A complete return to winter."
"Having been skiing this morning since 7am with the start of the Casio G Shock NZ Snowboard Nationals I can confirm that there is plenty of snow out there and it is GOOD. Ankle deep powder off piste, mainly packed powder on the groomed with some chalky hard pack in places lower down. The ridges have continued to take a beating but I would estimate 90+% of the terrain is skiable."

"Superb week here at The Remarks with conditions going from winter to spring and now back to winter with a cold southerly polar blast bringing a dusting of new fluffy powder (3cm)and giving us a return to excellent snowmaking conditions.
"Our Primo Terrain Park has been getting maximum usage with the gang keeping all the hits in top shape. It's riding big!! The kids terrain park is also taking shape with the spiral completed which by the way has had a que since we opened it, the kids love it.
"Last Sunday saw the Extreme entourage hit the Remarkables with round 1 of The NZ Extreme Freeskiing Championships to be held in the Alta Chutes area utilising chutes such as Elevator, Festival, and Pipeline. This area really tested the skills of the best and competitors raved about the snow conditions."
"Warmer temps can mean only one thing SPRING!!!, firm at first and softening through the day, spring corn on the sunny faces and the odd powder day thrown in for good measure. What a recipe for another grand month in the mountains."
"I'm off now to get some corn out on Homeward Bound ......"

>================ Waiorau Snow Farm
Sleds, teams of dogs and mushers? Alaska? The far north pole? Nope ...... just another far out Waiorau Snow Farm event held last weekend.
Single, two, three, four and six dog teams. Adult, junior, male and female mushers. 3km and 8km. And to cap it all off an overnight 50km sled dog race. Hee haw, or whatever they yell at the straining husky's.
>================ Eric is Raven about Queenstown
From: "Eric Raven"
Subject: Queenstown Rocks"Hello Evan, I'd just like to say that last week I visited Queenstown for the first time. I live in Wellington and have only previously skied on Mt Ruapehu and Rainbow (Apart from a Contiki ski week in Austria). I skied the incredible slopes of Cardrona, The Remarkables and Coronet Peak.
"WOW. Absolutely incredible and the nightlife in Queenstown ROCKS. I'm coming back as soon as my bank account recovers, see you soon.
