Kiwi Snow Reports, New Zealand

June 12, 2000 - Free and Independent

Kia Ora

We got dumped on. Yep. Sunday morning I woke to a white glow from the moon and an eery reflection from a layer of snow. The basin was lit up like a giant glow worm! Wild winds and a stormy night saw a fair bit of wind blow.

Monday morning and it's a whole new scenario. We had 12 inches at our place. I know, I measured it. The night was very still so it was light, white and fluffy. Oooohhh.

And I just didn't expect it. Sure I heard the "snow to 400m" in amongst the radio psycho babble and admired a nice tight little low about to blitz the bottom of the south island but the thought of a white breakfast just didn't really click.

And as I write Jim Hickey tells me the North is getting plastered with Whakapapa and Turoa targeting June 23 opening dates.

>== Cumulative Snow Table

These reports are taken from the radio, paper, internet or by walking outside in my bare feet. Most generally they are as reported by the snow areas and are usually taken first thing in the morning. The two columns relate to the bottom and the top of the snow area.

Don't forget that snow compacts a lot so what you hear and what you see may be two different things :-)

Treble Cone - opening 22 June

Coronet Peak - opened 4 June
Heaps of new snow but a patchy weather pattern over the last few days has frustrated quality snow experiences. Sunday morning was probably the winner. I missed it :-(

Greengates Triple and Rocky Gully T-Bar still closed but I can't image they will be too long. The Peak is now seriously set up for a stunning season!

Cardrona - opening 24 June

Remarkables - opening 24 June - a week earlier than expected!

Waiorau Snow Farm - opening soon
Latest snowfall - heaps in drifts.

>== Queenstown Winter Festival

50 events from July 14 to 23 and it's being called the southern hemisphere's biggest winter party. Anyone out there disagree? Go on. Dare you.

Check out our Winter Festival Events Calendar and if you are down this way don't miss the Big Air, Sheep Dog Derby and the Jazz nite.

>== It snowed on the trees!

Well thanks to those folks, all 1 268 of them, that took the time to have a guess when we would next get dumped on here in Queenstown.

And you know what? Eleven people guessed the date correct.

Make sure you re enter our competition and next time you could be the winner! Check out;
http://www.kiwinewz.com/html/freeqtwn.htm

Well who won? Sharon Bradley was the winner we chose out of a hat from the eleven finalists and you know what? She made her guess way back in February 2000. Good on you Sharon!

So what does Sharon win? Two nights accommodation in a luxury lakeside lodge ( the TSS Earnslaw chugs past three times a day ) with spa bath, Sky TV and room for 6 people just 1 minute walk from Queenstown.

And how did Sharon guess the date. Why it's her mothers birthday isn't it! Go Shazza!

>== "Slow Down"

A critical night time rainfall and some quick freezing saw the local roads glaze and four accidents in Queenstown within an hour last Friday. It was slick. We drove past a car on it's side and a succession of ambulances and fire engines in attendance.

Blow me down next day in the paper I see a picture of this car on it's side and Terry and Judy Barret visiting from Kere Kere in the warm North. Hey! I used to live next to them. Gidday ex neighbours. Thankfully both of them are fine although Judy found herself hanging upside down by her seatbelt.

Anyway the word is "Slow Down" which is being plastered on billboards around the highways of the snowy south island by Transit and the local councils. Word also was that they were distributing ice scrapers and winter driving brochures though local service stations but I wouldn't hold your breath. I asked at 3 service stations and got some pretty dumb stares and yep you guessed it. No scraper or brochure. Oh well. Good idea.

And the police have got in on the act. Seems this year they are going to crack down on winter driving antics and check to make sure people have chains if they are required. As for the enthusiastic flame carrier that passed a police car going up Coronet Peak - wrong move ...

>== Post Shop Purchasing

Phooeeee I hear you say. What purpose could be served by buying your day pass at a Post Shop. That's what I said. Then I got to thinking.

How many times have you hit the mountain, late, sun shining and heart racing as a brilliant day dawns and run smack in to a queue to buy a day pass. You have got to be kidding. The chap in front has a family of 5 with two kids for the crèche, rental gear and lessons and ........

Now I'm sure not every ticketing experience is as exasperating as that one but you know what I mean. Why not buy it down town at the Post Shop the day before? Jump out of the car in the morning, swerve right past that ticket queue and head straight for the lifts. That's got to be almost as good as having a season pass :-) Heck, the Queenstown Post Shop is open just about 24 hours a day.

Or what about buying a ticket for someone's birthday, or a nice reward for a hard working employee off to the southern slopes. The opportunities are endless.

So next time you go in to a Post Shop in New Zealand ask about buying a day pass and see what happens. Go on.

>== Roger Skugrud wants to go extreme

Here's an excellent question from Roger

> I hope to ski New Zealand this season and am an expert skier that
> wants to ski the steep (extreme type) runs.
> I would like most of it to be assessable from the lifts, but wouldn't
> mind a short hike if necessary.

The Remarkables offers a brilliant range of back country skiing. With a 10 - 15 minute walk you can ski some excellent chutes and couloirs down in to Lake Alta - Escalator, Inclinator and Terminator. Walk a bit further and you can start to get in to some real country. Heck, why not do the Grand Couloir coming down from the twin peaks!

Treble Cone is probably the most challenging field around Queenstown with some excellent steep terrain. A 30 minute walk from the top of the Saddle T-Bar takes you to the summit and some great slopes.

Now if you want to get me going on the North Island I could talk about the terrain at Whakapapa and touring around a crater lake ..... but then I would probably also have to tell you about the rainy days shuffling cards in the hut .......

Take care out there and ski with a partner!
