Back to winter as warnings echoed out from the weather gurus to watch out for the storm, especially those new born lambs. But it all came to squilch and only a few of the local fields got a dusting. The next few days however produced two good falls and it is snowing outside as I write.

>================ We Get Mailz

This one is from Dellabarca in Auckland

"I would just like to say your sight rulz. i live in auckland so can not see for my self the awesome snow we have.

Wow. I rule. The snow is awesome and heck I have seen some pretty scenes on our Snow Cams. Funny thing is as I travel around the Wakatipu basin I continually see vistas that would be great to broadcast to the world. But I'm not sure if I rule ..... just yet :)

And Hadden Gamble along with a few others;

"Looks like someone has pulled the curtains on Cardrona Cam.

Just noticed that. Woops. I think shed gurrrll bumped the camera!

>================ Fijian ski team

You better believe it. A European benefactor has decided that the Fiji flag needs to fly at the next Winter Olympics so he is bank rolling a team of five Fijians on a mountainous assault. Chosen from 70 odd applicants they were chosen for their athleticism and co-ordination as well as any winter experience. Heck, most of them haven't even seen snow! First thing they have to do is learn how to ski, well one of them is an instructor

Funny thing is not many of them look like Fijians.

>================ Fly Big Air at Mt Hutt and win a trip to Canada

Dear Evan,

Have been enjoying your reports that are fed to my computer via my fiancés email.

Was wondering if you could put a bit in the next one on a Big Air that we are holding up Mt Hutt on September 4. It is unique in that all the entry fees are going to a charity I work for, CanTeen. CanTeen is a peer support group for teenagers living with cancer. A worthwhile cause plus the sponsors, Canada 3000. have put up a return airfare to Vancouver as first prize for both the Open Mens and Open womens!!

I'm afraid it is only open to snowboarders, entry on the day at Mt Hutt, 9am. Information and pre entry forms can be gained by calling me at 0800 350 053. Would much appreciate it.

Cheers! Shiwon

>================ Dodger@SkiMtCargill.com!!!

Gidday Evan,

I have identified a wonderful new site for another snowcam .... Mt Cargill!!!! 10cm fresh powder fell on the 'mountain', NZ's latest ski field last night and is still falling as we speak. All base facilities (Speights Brewery, Wilson Distillery and Cadbury's) are operating and the access road (State Highway One) is open, but chains must be fitted at the start of the motorway.

So come on down and ski at NZ's newest field ... where the snow is great and the beer, whiskey, and chocolate is even better!!!!

Regards Dodger@SkiMtCargill.com!!!

Thanks Dodger. Now for those of you that don't know Dodger is a Bottom Bus driver, geologist and passionate about the deep south. He's an ex scarfie from Dunedin and if you read today's Sunday Times you will know that Bottom Bus will take you to the "Scarfies" flat. Heck. Dodger might even be driving!

Ang Gibson from nzski.com and Coronet Peak drops in with the following snippets;

"The USA women's team are training here this week and they have been joined by our very own Claudia Riegler. Claudia will remain training here until she goes to compete at the New Zealand National Championships at Mt Hutt on Sept 15 and 16

"Snow Conditions: Our week started with spring like snow conditions - firm at first and softening during the day. On Tuesday we had a reminder that it's not spring yet with a fresh fall of 3 cm of new snow. This, combined with our snowmaking system, has made awesome skiing and riding conditions!

>=============== Roy Dingo Willet's Speaks ... all the way from Cairns

"Yo dude. Can't tell you what Ohau was like on Thursday because we went heli skiing with Alpine Guides / Wilderness. It was closed but they opened it up for us as we missed out on Tuesday, and it was FAB. Only 5 runs, but got in 3700m vert.

"I could have done twice that. I'm now in love with heli skiing and just want unlimited back country wilderness access for ever. 4 good sunny runs then 1 as clouds and flat light rolled in in a big hurry.

"Next year come hell or high water I'm showing up with 8 people and renting a chopper and a guide as you were saying.

Pick me. Pick me

Here's the news from Hamish;

"Superb week here at The Remarks with conditions going from winter to spring and now back to winter with a cold southerly polar blast bringing a dusting of new fluffy powder (3cm)and giving us a return to excellent snowmaking conditions.

"Our Primo Terrain Park has been getting maximum usage with the gang keeping all the hits in top shape. It's riding big!! The kids terrain park is also taking shape with the spiral completed which by the way has had a que since we opened it, the kids love it.

"Sunday sees the Extreme entourage hit the Remarkables with round 1 of The NZ Extreme Freeskiing Championships to be held in the Alta Chutes area utilising chutes such as Elevator, Festival, and Pipeline. This area really tested the skills of the best last year and competitors raved about the snow conditions which this year are even better. So some highly exciting action, access is via skiing to Alta Col and into the Lake Alta area or a short walk on a groomed track from the top of the Alta double chair.

>================ Waiorau Snow Farm

Sam Lee won both the opens men's skate and classic titles at the two day New Zealand cross - country ski championships held at the Waiorau Snow Farm last weekend. Keri McArthur from Dunedin also made a clean sweep of the womens event.

And then we have Sam's mum Mary Lee out there cleaning up in the Womens Masters event. Yo mum! John Burridge from Wellington won the Mens Masters.

>================ Surf Report

Maz Quinn, of Gisborne, has won the USD $60,000 O'Neill Surf Challenge 4-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event. The event was held at Cavaliers beach in Anglet, France in small conditions over the past week but was blessed with high-quality 1-2m conditions for the final day. Raglan's Daniel Kereopa also performed well, placing 5th= to complete a career-best result for both New Zealanders.

Chris from BoarderZone has twisted together the mpegs from the official site.

And don't forget our very own Primo Peak to Porridge. 24 - 26 September with the rad Boardercross on Coronet Peak then a wild surf at Porridge in Riverton. For more information surf on over to the site or email me.
