Queenstown and Wanaka Snow Areas, New Zealand

Updated 16 June, 2001

Kia Ora

The 5 snow fields in the Southern Lakes area around Queenstown and Lake Wanaka offer the most diverse range of snow activities in New Zealand. Skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing or do it all in the backcountry by helicopter. Coronet Peak, Cardrona, The Remarkables, Waiorau Snow Farm and Treble Cone are all within 2 hours drive of each other.

The ski season goes from June to October although this varies a bit from place to place. Mt Hutt is nearly always the first open and often the last closed. All of the skiing is done up in the mountains which means that after skiing you can come down and have a game of golf or go for a jet boat ride!

About two hours drive from Christchurch are Mt Hutt and the Craigeburn Range area with Mt Hutt, Porters Heights, Craigeburn and Temple Basin.

If you have plenty of time to explore New Zealand it is probably worth skiing one of the three snow fields on our very own live volcano Mt Ruapehu, in the North Island. Whakapapa is without doubt the best ski field in New Zealand on its day ( that will stir up the bees nest!).
